Sarge was on the pills when we started the EPI road. We found we had to crush the pills to get any response and we were using 7 of them to 2 cups of food (some dogs need even more as it is about 7-9 tablets to equal a tsp of Pancreatin 6x powder or Viokase V powder). After I crushed them I had to wet the food and mix it then let it sit for 20 minutes so the enzymes would digest the food before the stomach acids killed the enzymes when he ate it. I now use the powdered Pancreaitn 6x. I do not use much water on the food just enough to wet it all and get the powder to no longer show. I let this sit for 20 minutes. I feed a small kibble and it gets a bit sticky and will stick together but tossing it with a fork would break it back apart.

Viokase Powder is a concentrated medication of pancreatic enzymes used to promote more efficient digestion in canines. The enzymes are of porcine origin and aid in the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Viokase Powder is also used as an aid for digestive and biliary disorders. It is effective in treating acute pancreatic disorders, but can also be used as a replacement therapy for dogs suffering from chronic pancreatic and digestive problems. For dogs you should mix ¾ to 1 teaspoon of the Viokase-V powder in with each meal and allow it to sit 15 to 20 minutes before feeding your dog. If you are using Viokase-V tablets instead you should give your dog 2 to 3 tablet with each meal. For you cat the amount should be ¼ to ¾ teaspoon of Viokase-V powder mixed with their food and also should sit 15 to 20 minutes before feeding. If you use tablets you should give your cat ½ to 1 Viokase-V tablet with each meal. In case of acute pancreatic attack or if your pet is suffering from chronic pancreatitis then Viokse Powder is administered. Viokase Powder is well mixed with each meal (moistened food) and then left for 15 min Dosage is different in case of dogs and cats. For cats ¼ – ¾ teaspoonfuls is given with each meal. For dogs ¾ – 1 teaspoonful is given with each meal. How should Viokase-V be used?
The usual dose of pancreatic enzymes in dogs is 3/4-1 teaspoonful of the powder mixed with each meal. It is recommended to allow the mixture to stand for 15-20 minutes before feeding it to the animal. If using tablets give 2-3 tablets with each meal. For cats, the usual dose is 1/4-3/4 teaspoonful of the powder mixed with each meal. It is recommended to allow the mixture to stand for 15-20 minutes before feeding it to the animal. If using tablets give 1/2-1 tablet with each meal. Each teaspoon contains 2.8 grams of powder.I posted to your first post, but the thread disappeared into cyberspace I guess. Since you've got the pills, I would crush them. Most dogs don't do as well on the pills as they do on the powder. Donna is right the powder that we get from Enzyme Diane is one that most of us use and the cost is a great deal less. When I first started Akira out on enzymes, it cost me nearly as much to buy 4 ounces of Viokase-V powder as it does to buy a kilo of Pancreatin from Diane. There wasn't a problem switching from the Viokase to the Pancreatin and it's what I've used in all the years since. The general starting place and what seems to work best for most dogs, is 1 teaspoon of enzymes per cup of kibble so for a two cup kibble meal, it would be two teaspoons mixed with lukewarm water (about 1/2 cup) and poured over the kibble. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes depending on each dog's needs...most do fine on 20-30 minutes but some need it incubated for 45 minutes to an hour. Make sure all of the kibble is coated and stir well before you set it down for her to eat.
