Dogs love a comfy place to sleep…a place to call their own that they can depend on. The most important factor in choosing a bed is size. Choose a bed that fits your dog when he is sprawled out, as many dogs deeply sleep in this way. If your dog likes to sleep curled up in a ball, check out a round “nest” bed or provide a blanket for him to curl up in which can also double for a chewing play toy (beware: this blanket will get shredded and need to be replaced!). Dog beds need not be expensive and can be as simple as a large pillow. More ornate dog beds are themed, raised, built with stairs, or shaped like a canopy bed. Just search “dog beds” online for an enormous assortment of bedding choices.

Richard purchased a catalog of the exhibit “The Life of Dogs” primarily as a reference for the ornate dog collars. Soon enough, however, he was busy researching the history of dog beds and paying much more attention to the catalog’s illustrated French dog niches going back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
