In theory I don’t have a problem with muzzles, providing the basket design is used when the dog has to wear it for more then a few minutes. The snug ones which don’t allow the dog to properly pant and dissipate body heat. However, I’m not a big fan of using muzzles to stop barking, chewing or cupboard raids etc. It’s the wrong tool for the job. If you muzzle a dog, will that stop him from barking all night long?

Dogs that have been "trained" in this way are showing avoidance to the muzzle, not a desire to stop their barking! You are gaining nothing, treating the symptom but not the disease! There are a lot of stop-barking devices available on the market. The most commonly known are bark collars that deliver an electric shock, high-pitched squeal, or stinging spray of citronella mist whenever a pet dog barks. Other devices include ultrasonic emitters that are placed in a room and activated by barking and muzzles that keep the dog’s jaws held shut. Those first few days, the puppy is never allowed to bark or make any real noise of any kind. Whenever he barks or whines, I just put my hand around his muzzle and say "quiet". As soon as he stops, I release and praise. Soon, I can just say "quiet" and the puppy will be quiet. Treats are also used for rewards when he is quiet. When crating the puppy as part of his housebreaking, and at night, I use a throw-can. This is just an empty soda can with some pennies in it, and the opening taped up. As soon as the puppy whines, loudly shake the can. Don't say anything, the noise will startle the puppy into being quiet. You may have a fairly sleepless first night, but most dogs pick up the idea by the second night. I do however, get up very early with a young puppy to let them out...it's not fair to ask a puppy to hold it longer than they are capable of and be quiet as well.Humans can mimic this behaviour to stop barking when the dog is nearby. With your dog sitting at your left side, slip the fingers of your left hand under the collar at the back of your dog's neck. Pull up on the collar with your left hand, while your right hand folds over the top of the dog's muzzle and presses down. In a quiet, businesslike and unemotional tone, you simply say, "Quiet." Your left hand on the collar immobilizes the head. Your right hand serves the same function and communicates the same message as the leader's mouth over the noisy animal's muzzle. The softly spoken "Quiet" mimics the short, low and breathy growl. Repeat this silencing manoeuvre whenever it is necessary. Depending upon the breed, it may take anywhere from two to a couple of dozen repetitions to associate the calmly stated command, "Quiet," with an end to barking. While muzzles have been used in the past to prevent barking, the common consensus in this day and age is that muzzling a dog for extended periods of time is cruel, dangerous and completely ineffective because it does not address the underlying cause of the barking. A quick Google search will show you multiple webpages on dog training and dog behaviour: none of them recommend the use of muzzles to stop chronic barking and most highlight the potential dangers of unsupervised muzzle usage, such as overheating or injury. Here is the ‘s take on muzzle usage in the greyhound racing industry:You’re likely to have a frightened dog rather than one who is quiet. You should not leave the muzzle on long, nor should you leave a dog wearing a muzzle unattended as he could get injured easily. So, this method doesn’t work and is dangerous. You should not use this method at any time to stop barking.
