It's usually a result of years (centuries) of breeding that trait in, and what makes so many of the larger breeds great watch/guard dogs. But, not exactly great when you just want to enjoy your own yard. It's times like that when you have to remember that it's not the breed, it's the individual dog (who may, unfortunately, be encouraged by their owner).
