Some features to take into account when purchasing a ramp are is it easy clean? Is it durable? Does it come with a warranty? Is it stable and provide good traction? An important feature of a ramp is traction and stability. If it's too unstable the dog might not even want to use it. And if they slip on the ramp if it's wet they definitely won't use it. Make sure your ramp has traction and stability upon purchasing. For larger breed dogs you also want to make sure it's durable. Ramps are generally pretty durable for the most part, but you will want to take this into consideration when having a giant breed dog that's going to test the ramp to its limits. Royal Ramps foam is also weight rated. Large dogs can use the stairs and ramps just as successfully as smaller animals. In fact, one of the quality assurance tests employed is for people to walk on the stairs without damaging them. This design standard is so important because for many animals, those with health conditions or who are older, a supportive surface that will not sink due to weight application is necessary. Sinking may cause pets to lose their balance, and be unable to climb up or down the stairs without risk of tripping or falling. Sinking foam also places unnecessary or even dangerous pressure on joints. This weight rating then offers safety and security, and is recommended by veterinarians. We took a look at the products on the market. The stationary stairs available were built for smaller dogs, too small and too weak to hold her, and because the shallow depth and narrow width of the steps were not designed for large dogs. The other option available to us was dog ramps. Dog ramps had the portability we liked, but structurally they were unstable. Because there is no support except on the far ends, dog ramps tend to “bounce”, what we call “the diving board effect.” This instability can cause dogs to fear them, as K.C. did. Also, they were not as safe because the ramp base is small it could, and would slide along a slick surface causing the dog ramp to fall. And even folded the ramps were still 3 to 4 feet long which took up too much room. These are the lightest and strongest pet ramps available. Our extra-large aluminum/high-density polyethylene ramp supports up to 300 lbs. and is perfect for accessing pickups, taller vehicles, and stairways.
